Junior Teams - 30 May 2007
For all our younger members, you will find we have set up a page for our club 'Teams'. We would like all junior coaches or parents willing to help, to email any relevent information to us so we can add the juniors and show off the future of our club. We hope to add match reports, photos, player profiles and anything else to these pages over the course of the season. Visit the Junior site soon to see and read about these teams.
08/05/07 The Claymore's first game of the season got off to a slow start, plenty of possession and loads of chances but could'nt get the ball in the net, it was Awakeri/Edgecumbe who scored first then the Claymore's made it 1-1.A scrappy first half saw it end at 2-2. A few words from the Claymore's coach at half time did the trick, a couple of changes, a few great passes, and the goals started to pour in, the goals came from everywhere, but the goal of the day belongs to Brandon Collier a 25 yard strike right into the top right hand corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. The game ended 14-2 for the Claymore's, it was a great effort from all the players but it was Adam Thompson who was awarded the player of the day, he worked non stop in defence, midfield and attack even scoring a goal.Well done Adam.
 Team. Bret,Mitchell,Patrick,Jack,Daniel,Hoaani(capt),Elliot,Connor,Chris-B,Brandon-S,Chris-S, Adam,Ryan,Brandon-C,Haydon.
Just a quick note on the Scorpions vs Rockets on the weekend. Hard fought match that could have gone either way with both sides attacking hard in the dying minutes. Score was 1 - 1. Tane Purcell scored for the scorpions. Brooke Hiricks was player of the day. All of the team played really well with good support from the sideline.
Panthers 8th grade vs Allandale was a close match with both teams determined to keep the opposition from scoring. With only minutes left the Allandale side managed to make use of its many subs and score the winner. Panthers Player of the Day went to Te Rangi Tau
12/05/07 15th Grade Whakatane Claymore's do it again. We knew this was going to be a hard game just by looking at our opposition you could see they mean't business and proved this with the determinaton they showed against the Claymore player's on the field. The Opotiki goal keeper was primed to stop the ball but the Claymore's skill in getting the ball past him into the net was nothing short of brillliant! Brandon Smith raced through their defence scoring four or five goals, he was awarded the player of the day for his great efforts, well done Brandon. The goal of the day was scored by Connor Davies, a corner kick taken by Brandon Smith landed at Connor's feet on the edge of the eighteen yard line, a right foot shot into the bottom corner leaving the goalkeeper no chance. The game ended 7-3 to the Claymore's. Well done to everybody it was a great team effort, and thanks to the mums and dads for there vocal support at the side of the park it was much appreciated.
Scorpions vs Opotiki Raiders. We lost 3-0 in a closer game than the score would suggest. The whole team played really well. Player of the day was Ethan Hobman who played at goalkeeper in the 1st half and attacker in the 2nd. Also outstanding was Logan Fincham who put his body on the line several times in the 2nd half as goalie and kept the Raiders scoreless for the second period. The Scorpions are starting to gel really well and everyone had a great game in beautiful old Opotiki.
Whakatane WLB United v's Whakatane Cheetahs The first game of the season for WLB United was against our own team the Cheetahs. This was a special game as our Cheetahs are made up of 11-13 year old girls who are playing in the senior girls league as there is no Junior girls this year. This was a situation many of the girls in WLB United had been in two years ago when they first started playing. The game was well played by both teams with the Cheetahs giving it all they had and with WLB United pulling back to make it fun as well as competitive. The final score was 7-1 to WLB United with goals scored by Jamie 3. Kisten 3 and Kate 1. Player of the Day was Jamie Whitely for her awesome effort.
Whakatane WLB United v's Trident 2nd IX
WLB United met Trident 2nd Xl this Saturday in a hard game with both teams evenly matched and determined to win. The game proved to be very interesting with some good passing displayed by both teams.Trident was the first to score with a goal in the first half. This was followed by several ill fated goal attempts from both Whakatane and Trident. After an attempt by Jamie that hit the goal post, Kirsten managed to score.
First Game Nerves
 Warming up
Both Kate and Nicole were starts again as our goal keepers. With no substitutes for WLB United and with Grace Moore playing on the feild with an injured knee it was a nail biting last fifteen minutes with the ball going from one end of the pitch to the other. The game ended in a one all draw. Player of the day for WLB United was Georgia Beamish-White for her magnificent on field performance. A brilliant effort from all the team who played with sheer guts and determination - you made your coach and your supporters all very proud. A special thank you to Graeme Moore for refereeing our game once again.
Player of the day Georgia Grace Moore
19/05/07 What a game!!! Scorpions went down in a thriller to Awakeri on the weekend 1-0. Awakeri scored through a powerful strike with only two minutes to go. Great play by both sides with the match very evenly poised, shifting from one end to the other with speed and attack. Outstanding effort in goal defense with Brooke Hiricks saving many goals in the first half and Jacob Rota also doing well in the second. Player of the day was Tane Purcell who had some great break aways on attack and some awesome defence. Also outstanding was Ethan Hobman who never stopped running, Dale Seymour who had some great attacks supported well by Logan Fincham and Savannah Jones who both made excellent contributions throughout the game. Worth a note was the support from the sideline with some very excited parents encouraging the kids on. Next week against the Saints should also prove a thriller, there is a sting in the scorpions tail.
Jaguars vs Saints - A hands down game to Whakatane jaguars 11-0. But a great game and good work put in from the Saints. A couple of quick off the mark goals from Liam Jones within the first five minutes then the defence came up from the Saints. A great team effort for the rest of the game with everyone playing their positions really well. Great goal keeping and defence didn't give the Saints a chance, however everyone enjoyed the magnificient header from one of their team deflecting a goal.

19 May Whakatane WLB vs Kawerau College Whakatane WLB United knew Kawerau were the strongest team in the league and went into this game well aware of what the outcome might be. The result was a 9-0 loss for WLB United but they learnt a lot. The girls played hard and lifted their approach to the game from being courteous to being as assertive as the Kawerau team. With two players out with injuries, one sub and goalie Nicole playing with a sprained ankle the resolve of the entire team was tested.
Kerri-Ann Wills had a great game as back clearing the ball many times from the goal, some of which were picked up by Rachel who then made several good tackles and good attacks on Kawerau's defence. Morgan managed to get several runs to the goal but was shut down by Kawerau each time. Once again the girls proved they know how to play as a team with no particular player shining any more than the other but each girl improving on a personal level.
The girls are to be commended on how they came off the field smiling - could be something to do with the team motivator - REMEMBER THE CRUNCHIES! Thanks again to Haddock Spraypainters for sponsoring the strip - Don't we look gorgeous in it.
Player of the Day was Morgan Prevette

26 May: Scorpions vs Saints
The Scorpions went down on the weekend in another very good game against the Saints 4 - 1. Kalae Kora was the player of the day, also the most improved with some great attacking runs throughout the game also outstanding this week was Savannah Jones. Tane Purcell was the goal scorer early in the first half. The Scorpions played really well with good goal keeping efforts by both Jacob Rota and Logan Fincham, the number of attacks by the Saints in the end were four to many. Ethan Hobman, Dale Seymour and Brooke Hinricks were all great on both attack and defense with Dale putting his body on the line again this week to secure the ball.
Well done the Saints who also have some great young players.
21 July: Scorpions vs Kawerau
A great game with a lot of heart shown by a sickness ravaged team, reduced to five players for the whole game. We lost a hard fought game 5-0 with some goodstrikes by the whole team. Player of the day was Ethan Hobman (for the second time this season) who never stopped running on attack and defence. Also outstanding were Brooke Hinricks and Savannah Jones (go the girls), very well supported by Dale Seymour and Jacob Rota. Some great skills shown, with good support on the sideline.

First Touch Prizegiving: Whakatane McDonalds came on board as the sponsor for our First Touch Soccer programme that is targeted at giving children aged 4-5 the opportunity to experience soccer at a level suitable for them. The programme involves basic soccer skills and uses fun games along with parental involvement to help the child participate and learn. You may have seen these children at the eastern side of the clubrooms each saturday morning with their mini fields, mini goals and McDonald's balls and bibs.
Prizegiving for these children was provided by Whakatane McDonald's with owners Lynda and Ross Osborne presenting each child with their McDonald's ball and certificate. The children then went to McDonald's and had a treat to finish with.
Thank you to McDonald's for providing sponsorship for this programme that benefits all EBOP clubs. Children in this programme will join different clubs throughout the EBOP when they begin league soccer.

Tournaments
17th June: Jubilee Cup
The 11th Grade Jubilee Cup tournament was a great success with more than 6 teams requiring places than there were avaliable. Teams from Opotiki, Papamoa, Otonga, Taupo, Mount Maunganui, Blue Rovers, Allandale, Ohope and Whakatane fought it out for a place in the semi-finals. Pool games were hampered by the wind causing the ball to curve away from its desired destination more than once. Once again our all girls team the Whakatane Firebirds had the boys on edge and the Whakatane Bullets played extremely close games.
Ohope, Papamoa Pirates, Otonga and the Blue Rovers Combo teams made it through to the semis. Games played were tough with Blue Rovers Combo and Papamoa Pirates making it through to a nail biting final where Papamoa Pirates pulled through to win 3 to nil. A tremendous effort by the Blue Rovers goal keeper who put his body on the line more than once.
Congratulations Papamoa Pirates on winning the Jubilee Cup for 2007.

August: Mount Maunganui 8th Grade Tournament
The Whakatane 8th Grade Junior’s team made up of Kees Turpie, Ben Hanright, Taine Hunia. Riley Allen, Aaron Kiwha and Ryan Richmond entered this tournament along with 15 other teams from Waipuna, Otumoetai, Mt Maunganui, Papamoa, Omokoroa, Blue Rovers and Te Puke. With no subs due to a clash with reps on the same day – the boys fought hard playing some great soccer against Otumoetai Gladiators, B.C. Rovers and the Blue Rovers Eagles. Although they didn’t win a game, the children gained a lot from the experience and both children and supporters were happy with the days effort. Great work boys and congratulations to Mount Surfers the winners.
2nd September: John Horsburgh Shield
The Junior club held its annual 10th grade John Horsburgh Shield with teams from Opotiki, Mount Maunganui, Otonga, Otumoetai, Allandale and Whakatane participating. Whakatane entered 3 teams this year, the 10th Grade Eagles, 9th Giants and our all girls 9th Grade Firebirds. The pool games produced some spirited competition with Opotiki the only Eastern Bay team to make it through to the semi-finals along with the Western Bay teams of Mt Hearts, Mount Lions and Outmoetai. The semi-final produced a surprise result with the 10th Grade Mount Lions being knocked out and the 9th Grade Mount Hearts making it through to the final to play against Otumoetai.
The final was well supported with some exceptional playing exhibited by all players especially as they had played 6 pool games, the semi-final and the final. Otumoetai won 4 nil against Mount Hearts to become the winners of the shield for 2007.
