Congratulations to Claudia Clark and Lauren Henry of the 11th Grade Tricky Chicks who have been selected for the October National Talent Centre after a recent Talent on Location Day at North Harbour Stadium.

Vincent Green 40th - 08 Aug 2011

The 11th Grade Whakatane Magpies travelled to Tauranga today to contest the Vincent Green 40th Anniversary Tournament.

Drawn in pool 4, the Magpies faced games against Otumoetai, Waipuna and hosts Blue Rovers spaced over the duration of the morning.

First up was Otumoetai Sharks and a morale boosting 4 – 0 victory.  Playing on larger fields than normal, the Magpies were quickly into good passing football, making the most of the space available.  Early first half goals to Kyle Hollowood and Thomas Pidgeon set the ball rolling.  In the second half, 8 year old Harry Pidgeon, enhanced his growing reputation with a deliberate lobbed goal, and Liam Godsmark – Tawa finished calmly after more good work by young Harry.

The momentum carried on into game 2, and qualification for the quarter finals was secured with a 5 – 0 thumping of Waipuna Typhoons.  The good passing football continued, and several opportunities came and went.  Thomas Pidgeon and Kyle Hollowood both scored with long range efforts, and Isaia Renata and Raess Abdurahman finished off well-constructed passing moves.  Kyle Hollowood grabbed the 5th goal of the game using his pace to break the Waipuna defence.

Game 3 came after a break of 90 minutes, and the Magpies struggled to get going in the first half.  Host team Blue Rovers United were out like a shot, and found themselves 3 goals up at half time.  With a mountain to climb to finish top of the group, the Magpies battled well to try and reduce the arrears.  Kyle Hollowood had the ball in the back of the net, but was denied his 4th goal of the tournament by the linesmans flag, before Waitaha Shortland got the rewards for his good play, with a drilled consolation goal into the far corner.

All eyes then turned to the skies.  As the wind picked up, and the rain came down, there was another lengthy rest before the quarter finals.

This was as far as the Magpies were going to progress in this tournament, as they came up against a very slick, Saints All Blues team.  Despite a good start to the match, the Magpies could not contain their local rivals, who boast many EBOP rep players, and an unbeaten league record in the EBOP 13th Grade Premier Division.  Saints comfortably saw out the game 4 – 0.

Despite the setback, and the exit from the competition, the Magpies should take heart from some very good performances.  They did the club proud.

The whole team played an awesome tournament, but Magpies Player of the Day went to Kyle Hollowood, whose pace down the left wing caused so many problems for the opposition.

Papamoa Mid Season Tournament - 19 Jul 2011

On Sunday 17th July two of our junior sides made the short thrip up the coast to play in the Papamoa Mid - Season Tournament.

The 9th Grade Force, and the 11th Grade Magpies found it tough going against strong opposition from the Central North Island and Auckland regions.

The normally free scoring Force team, failed to find the back of the net against their well structured, and drilled opposition, taking a solitary point in pool play from a 0 - 0 draw with Otumoetai Dynamo's.  2 - 0 defeats at the hands of Drury United Hurricanes, Manurewa Lightning, and Glenview United Jets left the Force bottom of the pool, and facing an early trip home.

The Magpies also found it tough going.  A First game 1 v 0 defeat to Otonga Bulls was always going to make qualification from pool play a big ask.  A draw (0 v 0) in the second game against Waitakere City gave the Magpies hope, but a heavy 4 v 1 defeat to Otumoetai coupled with a Waitakere win over Otonga made qualifying impossible.  With all the pressure off, the Magpies played their best football of the day to hold group winners Papamoa to a 1 v 1 draw.

Both teams should be proud of their performances despite the lack of success, as they put on a good show in all the games, and represented the club with dignity.

Congratulations go out to Papamoa for organising and running such a large event, with tournaments for 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th/13th Grades, and Congratulations to Three Kings United and Manurewa Lightning who won the 11th and 9th Grade Tournaments.
